What should beginner Xero training cover?

If you are new to Xero, start with the tasks you are most likely to use first. You do not need to learn every feature at once.

Know the difference: general Xero training covers everyday accounting and bookkeeping workflows. Xero Payroll is a specialist area focused on employees, pay runs, leave and payroll reporting.

1

Dashboard and navigation

Learn where to find key areas such as contacts, bank accounts, invoices, bills and reports.

2

Invoices, bills and contacts

Build confidence creating invoices, recording bills and managing customer or supplier details.

3

Bank reconciliation

Learn how to match bank transactions with the correct invoices, bills or account categories.

4

Reports and GST basics

Understand basic reports and how GST settings connect to daily transactions.

5

Payroll basics if needed

If payroll is part of your goal, look for training that covers employee records, pay runs, payslips and payroll reporting.

Free Xero learning vs structured Xero training online

Free Xero learning can be useful for people who already understand bookkeeping or are comfortable learning independently. Structured training provides guided lessons, practical context and tutor support while you build confidence.

1 Free Xero learning may suit you if:

  • You already understand the basics and mainly want official Xero learning or certification
  • You already have bookkeeping or payroll experience
  • You only need help with one Xero feature
  • You are comfortable teaching yourself
  • You do not need tutor support

2 A structured Xero course may suit you if:

  • You want a clear step-by-step pathway
  • You are new to accounting software
  • You want tutor support while you study
  • You want bookkeeping or payroll context
  • You want guided course materials
  • You want to add completed training to your CV

A simple way to choose: Xero’s official learning pathways may suit you if you already understand the software or are comfortable learning independently. A structured course may be more suitable if you want guided lessons, practical bookkeeping or payroll context, tutor support and access to official Xero certification where included.

Xero certification and structured Xero training

Official Xero certification is awarded by Xero and is separate from completing a structured Xero course with The Career Academy.

A structured Xero course helps you build practical confidence before completing the official certification requirements. Depending on the course you choose, your training may cover everyday bookkeeping, bank reconciliation, payroll, reporting and more advanced Xero tasks, with tutor support available while you study.

Selected Xero courses at The Career Academy include access to Xero’s official certification after course completion, where stated on the individual course page. You can work through guided training first and then complete Xero’s certification requirements.

As of June 2026, Xero offers three certification levels that are completed in order. Xero certification is free, remains valid for 12 months, and can be completed through self-paced learning, a live webinar or an assessment-only route.

Xero certification levels

1 Xero associate certification
2 Xero professional certification
3 Xero specialist certification

Why choose structured training first? Xero certification confirms your knowledge of the Xero platform. A structured course gives you guided lessons, practical bookkeeping or payroll context, and tutor support while you develop those skills.

Xero Payroll training vs general Xero training

Xero Payroll and general Xero training are related, but they focus on different tasks.

General Xero training usually covers:

  • Contacts
  • Invoices and bills
  • Bank reconciliation
  • Sales and purchases
  • Reports
  • GST settings

Xero Payroll training usually covers:

  • Payroll settings
  • Employee records
  • Leave requests
  • Pay runs and payslips
  • Payroll reporting

If your goal is to understand everyday Xero bookkeeping tasks, a general Xero course may be the best place to start.
